When the Golden Handcuffs Start to Chafe: Is It Time to Finally Start Your Business?

You’ve known for a while now.

That quiet voice inside you has been nudging, sometimes whispering, sometimes nearly shouting: It’s time.

Time to build something of your own.

Time to stop putting your dreams on hold.

Time to step fully into the business you’ve envisioned for years.

And yet, you’re still where you’ve always been - showing up, delivering, excelling. Secure, but no longer fully engaged. Comfortable, yet strangely restless.

Most of my clients have been exactly where you are. They’ve spent years building successful careers, earning well, and leading in their spaces. But eventually, that success starts to feel limiting instead of freeing. The golden handcuffs - those tempting salaries, benefits, and predictable routines - become the very thing holding them back.

It’s easy to settle into the comfort zone. It’s familiar, and let’s be honest, it’s comfortable for a reason. You know what’s expected of you, and you can do it well. But here’s what happens when you stay longer than you should:

- You slip into autopilot – Work becomes more about routine than growth. You’re doing well, but you’re no longer fully engaged or energised.

- Opportunities pass you by – The longer you delay, the more doors close. The network, momentum, and energy you once had may not be as easily accessible later.

- You stagnate – You might not even realise it, but the spark that once made your work fulfilling starts to dim. You lose a sense of ownership over your future.

And then, one day, you look up and realise years have passed, and you're still standing at the same crossroads.

If this is resonating, consider this; You don’t have to stay stuck. The discomfort you’re feeling isn’t a burden but an invitation.

A reset isn’t about throwing everything away. It’s about acknowledging that you are ready for more. It’s about shifting your perspective from employee to entrepreneur and intentionally pursuing the business and life you truly want.

One of my clients recently shared this after gaining clarity on their transition:

“I have real clarity to step fully into what I know I have needed to do. I am seeing myself beyond someone going through a shift in career, but as an entrepreneur with new language for what I want of the business and life I see ahead.”

This is what happens when you stop waiting and start moving.
