I love holidays by the beach, watching the waves, walking on sandy beaches, enjoying the sea breeze! I enjoy waiting for the new waves and jumping them. I find it interesting that at the point when the new tide is coming in and the old tide is leaving, we hear and see the crashing of the waves.
I have in recent years experienced something similar to the crashing of the waves. This has had to do with new ideas on how to do business that rival models that I learned years ago. I remember when this began to happen, I would stay up nights trying to understand the new models of how businesses were transforming, I enrolled into business transformation coaching and mentoring programmes to get insight and understand the shifts that were taking place in the world of business and what I needed to do to pivot.
It is always challenging when we have to let go of what has worked previously. To do this successfully, we need to surround ourselves with others who are on the trajectory of the business transformation we want to experience. It requires that we participate in spaces that will challenge us to shift our way of thinking and dare to be different so we can do different and have different results. But for this to happen, we must first make a decision to leave the safety of the shore of our comfort zone and move into deeper waters of knowledge and understanding of where the future of business lies and begin to let go of what will no longer serve us.
As business leaders, it’s important to be keen to notice the subtle shifts as well as the not so subtle. Reflect on the trends of our clients, technology, global shifts and their impact on your business. Many businesses have ignored the signs of the times, become irrelevant and had to shut down. Whereas others have acknowledged the ebbing wave and had the courage to jump onto the new incoming wave and riding on its momentum, gone on to have great impact in their sphere of influence.
What are you noticing? What will you do about it?
